In addition to these traditional tasks in residue processing, recycling applications play an enormously important role. Due to rising oil prices and growing environmental awareness, the recovery of mineral, vegetable, and animal oils from various residues and by-products has been gaining importance for many years. The proper treatment of millions of tons of mineral oil sludges generated worldwide from the extraction, storage, and refining of crude oil produces a valuable raw material and energy source. Potential hazards to water, air, and soil are eliminated, and previously contaminated areas are made available again for meaningful use. Likewise, the further processing of plant and animal waste opens up new sources of high-quality oils and fats, often transforming the solid fraction of waste into a valuable by-product.
In contrast to conventional two-phase separation using a decanter, the HILLER three-phase decanter centrifuge can separate three phases in a single process step. In this process, two immiscible liquid phases of different densities are separated simultaneously from a solid phase. In addition to the well-known effect of solid separation through sedimentation, the density differences between the two liquids are utilized to separate them from each other.
